The Past and the Present
Like a lot of similar places throughout the United States, the unincorporated community of Sparks in northern Baltimore County, Maryland came into being because of a railroad. The Baltimore and Susquehanna Railroad built a siding and switch in an area near land owned by the Sparks family, and before long folks in the area started calling it “Sparks’ Switch.”
In the years that followed, it became the site of a creamery (the building, made of stone, still stands today) and a community slowly grew. Sparks Station, a station of the Northern Central Railroad, was then built in the area in 1889 and continued to operate until the 1970s.
Though the community known as Sparks was first mentioned in the history books only in the 19th century, the area it encompasses had been settled long before that. There’s the historic Milton Inn as evidence, a Quaker coach stop built in 1740 that became a boys’ school and is now a nationally-known restaurant.
Today, Sparks MD Real Estate is a thriving residential community and Sparks, MD homes for sale have prices ranging from the $600,000s to the $800,000s. People who move here are drawn by the community’s country charm, its proximity to business and financial centers and its wealth of opportunities for outdoor recreation.
